Two Southwest Softball Players
Named Academic All-American
Southwest student-athletes Amber Hayes and Katy Ahrens have been
named to the 2008-2009 National Junior College Athletic Association
(NJCAA) Academic All-American Team, becoming the sixth and seventh
Lady Saluqi softball players to receive the honor. In addition, they
were two of only ten student-athletes from colleges in the Tennessee
Community College Athletic Association (TCCAA) named to this year’s
Academic All-American Team. NJCAA Academic All-Americans must have a
cumulative grade point average of 3.60 or better on a 4.0 scale for
45 semester hours.
Hayes,
a graduate of Brighton High School, came to Southwest after
attending the University of Tennessee at Martin her freshman year.
She earned First Team All-TCCAA honors after batting .434 and
setting Southwest single season records with 17 home runs, 6
triples, 65 runs batted in, 66 hits, 139 total bases, and a .914
slugging average. Hayes also pitched in 16 games, compiling a 9-5
record with a 3.23 earned run average and 56 strikeouts. In
addition, she was named National Junior College Athletic Association
Division 1 Player of the Week, a first for a Southwest softball
player. Hayes will continue her education and softball career at
Union University in Jackson, Tennessee.
Ahrens,
a graduate of Collierville High School, transferred to Southwest
from Chattanooga State Technical and Community College. Ahrens’ 3.70
grade point average was the highest of all Southwest
student-athletes during the 2008-2009 academic year. As a freshman
in 2009, she was one of the Lady Saluqis’ top hitters with a .379
average, 10 doubles, five home runs, and 39 runs batted in. |

Basketball Signs Seven
Southwest women’s
basketball coach Andrea Martre has announced the
signing of seven student-athletes to National
Letters of Intent for the 2009-2010 season.
The Lady Saluqis signed
Crystal Riley and Cambriel Jeffries from West
Memphis Senior High School, Amanda Jones from H.W.
Byers High School in Holly Springs, Mississippi,
Latorya Simmons from Jackson Central-Merry (JCM)
High School in Jackson, Tennessee, and Decdrica
Brooks from Carver High School, Chantel Crout from
Cordova High School, and Kurstin Mead from Ridgeway
High School.

Riley, one of the
top three-point shooters in the state of
Arkansas, led West Memphis to 49 wins the past
two seasons and the Class 6-A state runner-up as
a senior. Riley was named to both the 6-A
All-State team and the all-state tournament
team.

Jeffries, a 6’3”
post player, was a teammate of Riley’s at West
Memphis. She was named the Arkansas Hoop
Report’s ARK Discovery’s Player of the Week and
was also a standout on West Memphis’ track and
volleyball teams.

Jones averaged 19.6
points, 3.4 assists, and 8.0 steals per game as
a senior and was selected to play in the
Northeast Mississippi Basketball Coaches
Association East-West All-Star Game. Jones led
H.W. Byers to 70 wins the past two seasons and
back-to-back Class 2-A state championships. She
was named second team All-Area by the Northeast
Mississippi Daily Journal and was the Cellular
South Player of the Game in the state
championship game.

Simmons was a
four-year letter-winner at JCM. As a senior,
Simmons averaged 14 points per game and was the
team’s leading scorer.

Brooks averaged 12
points per game as a senior and led Carver High
to the Region 8AA quarterfinals. She was named
All-District 15AA in both her junior and senior
seasons.

Crout was a two-time
All-District 14AAA selection at Cordova High.
As a senior, Crout averaged 12 points per game
and led Cordova to 18 wins and the semifinals of
the Region 7AAA tournament.

Mead averaged 14.3
points per game as a senior at Ridgeway High
during the 2007-08 season and was named
All-District 15AAA and to The Commercial
Appeal’s Best of the Preps All-Metro Team. Mead
originally signed with Robert Morris College but
did not play in 2008-09.
Southwest Baseball
Signs Eleven
The Southwest baseball program has signed eleven
student-athletes to national letters of intent, Head
Coach Bo Reynolds announced today.
The Saluqis signed
Daniel Billingsley, a pitcher/infielder from
Brighton; Sam Braswell, an outfielder from Bartlett;
Marcus Burk, an infielder from Bartlett; Chance
Chandler, an infielder from Brighton; Nick Cook, an
infielder from Lewisburg High School in Olive
Branch, Mississippi; Blake Dixon, an infielder from
Munford; Caleb Flexsenhar, a catcher from Christian
Brothers High School (CBHS); Zach Glidewell, an
infielder from Munford; Alonzo Powell, an outfielder
from Cordova; Bradley White, a catcher/infielder
from Munford; and Casey Willer, an infielder from
Collierville.

Brighton High’s
Billingsley and Chandler led their team to a
19-9 record and the District 13AAA
championship. Both were also named to the
All-District 13AAA and All-District 13AAA
tournament teams with Billingsley also garnering
tournament MVP honors. They were coached by
Brian Oswalt.

Dixon, Glidewell,
and White were coached by former Saluqi
infielder Steve Ledford at Munford High.
Glidewell and White were named to the
All-District 13AAA and All-Tournament teams.
Dixon was an All-Tournament selection. The trio
led Munford to a 20-11 record and runner-up in
District 13AAA this spring.

Cook was also
coached by a former Saluqi player, Rusty Cagle,
at Lewisburg High. Cook, a second baseman, led
Lewisburg to a 23-7 record and the second round
of the Mississippi High School Athletic
Association Class 3A Playoffs as a senior.

Braswell and Burk
helped lead Bartlett High to the District 14AAA
and Region 7AAA championships, a 32-11 record,
and the semifinals of the Class AAA state
tournament. They were coached at Bartlett by
Phil Clark.

Flexsenhar was a
catcher on CBHS’ 33-10 team that was the
Division 2AA West Region runner-up and finished
fourth in the Division 2AA state tournament. He
played for Coach Buster Kelso at CBHS.

Willer started at
third base on Coach Jeff Hopkins’ Collierville
High’s 34-11 team that won the Region 8AAA
championship and advanced to the semifinals of
the Class AAA state tournament.

Powell, a two-time
All-District 14AAA selection, led Cordova High
to a 22-10 record and the Memphis
Interscholastic Athletic Association Class AAA
city championship. He was coached at Cordova by
Jody Patrick.
