SALUQIS' BASEBALL
TEAM ELIMINATED FROM REGION VII TOURNEY WITH LOSS TO VOL
STATE
The Southwest baseball team (24-29) saw its season come
to an end Monday in the third round of the TJCCAA/NJCAA
Region 7 tournament at Columbia, Tenn., with a 12-8 loss
to Volunteer State. Sophomore third baseman Devin Hicks
hit two home runs and drove in four.
The Saluqis started tournament play on May 2 with a 5-1
victory over Motlow State. Sophomore righthander
Colby Fitzpatrick pitched a nine-inning two-hitter and
struck out five to earn the pitching victory.
Southwest lost to 2nd-ranked Walters State, 4-3, on May
3 despite an outstanding pitching effort by freshman
lefthander Matt Ince, who allowed just one earned run
and struck out a career-high 11 batters in six innings.
On Sunday, the Saluqis beat Jackson State 11-4 as
sophomore leftfielder Billy Ray Todd had four hits and
three RBI and freshman designated hitter Chris Coleman
slugged two homers with five RBI.
SOUTHWEST SOFTBALL TEAM LOSES TWO IN REGION VII
TOURNAMENT
The Lady Saluqis' softball team lost Sunday in Region 7
play to Jackson State, 6-4, to end its season at 30-32.
Freshman second baseman Carly McLennan slammed a two-run
homer for the Lady Saluqis, who lost May 3 to Cleveland
State, 4-2, in 10 innings. Sophomore catcher Courtney
LeBlanc was 3-for-4 in that game with two RBI.
