SALUQIS BASEBALL TEAM WINS TWO IN NOSTALGIA MAN CLASSIC
The Southwest baseball team won both of its games over the weekend in the
third annual Nostalgia Man Classic at AutoZone Park with victories over
Rhodes College and Christian Brothers University.
In game one versus Rhodes College, Southwest plated four runs in the first
inning on their way to an 8-4 victory. Jon Thurston was 3 for 3 with a
double and three runs batted in to pace the Saluqi attack. Jeremy
Finney (2 for 4 and an RBI) and Derrick McBride (2 for 3 and an RBI) were
the only other players with multiple hits. Chris Crenshaw pitched 4 innings,
earning the victory. The sophomore allowed three hits and struck out two,
while allowing three runs.
In game two versus Christian Brothers on Sunday, Brett Jenne and three Saluqi
relievers stifled the Buccaneer offense on their way to a 2-0 victory. Jenne
tossed the first three innings, allowing one hit and striking out four.
Chris Denny, Jas Ferguson, and Zac LaBarreare held the Bucs hitless and
scoreless over the next four innings. LaBarreare struck out the side
in the seventh to preserve the win. Offensively, Southwest was again led by
Finney who was 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles. Preston Burleson and Derrick
McBride each knocked in a run.
With the victory, Southwest was determined co-champion of the Nostalgia Man
Classic and will be awarded a spring date at AutoZone Park.
