| SALUQIS BASEBALL TEAM
OPENS SEASON, FIRST HOME GAME THURSDAY
The Southwest baseball team opened the
2003 season over the weekend, losing two games to Northwest-Shoals
(AL) on Saturday (scores of 3-2 and 5-3), then coming back on Sunday
to sweep Bevill State-Sumiton (AL) 6-1 and 4-2.
In the sweep of Bevill State, the
Saluqis' pitching staff was outstanding, allowing only one earned run
in 14 innings. In game one, freshman pitcher Michael Steele earned the
first win of his college career, allowing only one unearned run in
five innings of work. In the second game, sophomore second baseman
Brandon Doss went 2 for 3 with two stolen bases to lead the Saluqis to
victory. For the weekend, Doss batted .417 and stole four bases to
lead the team in both categories.
The first home baseball game will
be this Thursday, when the Saluqis take on Olive-Harvey College (of
Chicago, Illinois) in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Tony Gagliano
Memorial Field (on Mt. Moriah.) This will be the first of many Saluqis'
baseball games webcast on the Southwest website. To listen to
play-by-play, just go to athletics.southwest.tn.edu and click on the
