SALUQIS SWEEP OLIVE-HARVEY IN HOME
OPENER
The Southwest baseball team improved to 4-2 on the
season with a sweep of Olive-Harvey College in the Saluqis' home opener on
Thursday afternoon at Tony Gagliano Memorial Field.
After falling behind 4-0 in game one, the Saluqis scored three runs in the
fifth inning and two more in the sixth to win the game by a score of
5-4. Jacob Whisenhunt led off the fifth with a double and later scored
the Saluqis' first run on a balk. Then, with two out the Saluqis added
two more runs as pinch-hitter Reggie Huguet singled, followed by a triple by
Brandon Doss and a double by Patrick Williams. In the bottom of the
sixth, Wes Daniels tripled, scoring Whisenhunt, then scored the go-ahead run
on a throwing error. Relief pitcher Josh Meeker picked up the win,
retiring all seven batters he faced, including five strikeouts.
In the nightcap, the Saluqis jumped to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, then
added single runs in the third and sixth innings to win the game by a 5-1
margin. Russell Wren was the winning pitcher, going three innings,
allowing no hits, and striking out seven. Rightfielder Nathan Simpson
hit a home run, the first of the season for Southwest.
The Saluqis travel to East Central (MS) on Sunday for a 2:00 p.m. single
game, then to East Mississippi on Monday for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader before
returning home next weekend to open conference play against Hiwassee
College.
