SALUQIS SWEEP OLIVE-HARVEY IN HOME OPENER

The Southwest baseball team improved to 4-2 on the season with a sweep of Olive-Harvey College in the Saluqis' home opener on Thursday afternoon at Tony Gagliano Memorial Field.

After falling behind 4-0 in game one, the Saluqis scored three runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth to win the game by a score of 5-4.  Jacob Whisenhunt led off the fifth with a double and later scored the Saluqis' first run on a balk.  Then, with two out the Saluqis added two more runs as pinch-hitter Reggie Huguet singled, followed by a triple by Brandon Doss and a double by Patrick Williams.  In the bottom of the sixth, Wes Daniels tripled, scoring Whisenhunt, then scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error.  Relief pitcher Josh Meeker picked up the win, retiring all seven batters he faced, including five strikeouts.

In the nightcap, the Saluqis jumped to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, then added single runs in the third and sixth innings to win the game by a 5-1 margin.  Russell Wren was the winning pitcher, going three innings, allowing no hits, and striking out seven.  Rightfielder Nathan Simpson hit a home run, the first of the season for Southwest.

The Saluqis travel to East Central (MS) on Sunday for a 2:00 p.m. single game, then to East Mississippi on Monday for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader before returning home next weekend to open conference play against Hiwassee College.
