SOUTHWEST BASEBALL TEAM SPLITS WITH
6TH-RANKED WALTERS STATE
The Southwest baseball team opened the 2006 TJCCAA season on Friday,
February 17 at Tony Gagliano Memorial Field, splitting a doubleheader with
6th-ranked Walters State Community College. The Saluqis, under the direction
of third-year head coach Johnny Ray, improved its record to 6-2 on the
season while Walters State is now 10-1.
In
the opener, Southwest plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to
take the lead and eventually win 6-4. Sophomore right-hander Jason Adams
(pictured at right) earned his second victory of the season as he tossed
a complete game, striking out nine. The hitting star for the Saluqis was
sophomore second baseman Preston Burleson who went 3 for 4 with a double and
two runs batted in. Also with two base hits were sophomore outfielders
Derrick McBride and Jon Thurston, freshman shortstop Philip Gibson and
freshman first baseman Brad McPeek.
In the nightcap, Walters State pitcher Blake Carver (who has signed with
Auburn University) held Southwest to two hits as Walters State won by a
score of 2-0. Sophomore right-hander Darren Wills pitched six solid innings
for the Saluqis in a losing effort. He scattered seven hits and struck out
four.
Southwest returns to action on Tuesday, February 21 as they host Northeast
Mississippi Community College at Gagliano Field at 1 p.m. This weekend, the
Saluqis travel to Gallatin, Tennessee to take on Volunteer State Community
College in a three-game conference series. Southwest and Vol State will play
a single game at 3 p.m. on Friday, February 24 followed by a 1 p.m.
doubleheader on Saturday, February 25.
