SALUQIS BASEBALL TEAM
WINS SEVEN STRAIGHT
The Southwest baseball team won
seven straight games last week, including a three-game sweep of Motlow
State in a TJCCAA series over the weekend. The Saluqis opened play last
week with a sweep of Coahoma Community College (12-2, 14-1) at Gagliano
Field Tuesday afternoon. Southwest played Coahoma again Wednesday in
Clarksdale, Mississippi, and won both of those games as well, by scores
of 11-1 and 11-3.
Friday afternoon, Nick Smith and Jacob
Whisenhunt hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning, leading the
Saluqis to a 5-3 win over Motlow State. Michael Steele went six innings
to pick up the win, while Shane Jackson pitched three shutout innings to
earn the save. The Saluqis' pitching staff continued its outstanding
play on Saturday as Southwest swept Motlow 5-1 and 4-1. Scott Nobles
went the distance in game one, allowing six hits and no walks to win his
second game of the season. Russell Wren got the win in the second game,
allowing no runs and four hits in five innings. Marshall Mullins went
the final two innings to earn the save.
On Sunday afternoon, the Saluqis split a doubleheader with St. Louis
Community College-Florissant Valley, losing 9-8 in the first game, and
winning 6-5 in the nightcap. The Saluqis' record now stands at 14-8
overall and 4-4 in the TJCCAA. They return to action Tuesday with a 2
p.m. non-conference game against Lincoln Trail College at Tony Gagliano
Memorial Field. This weekend. the Saluqis travel to Harriman, Tennessee,
for a three-game TJCCAA series against Roane State Community College\ at
2 p.m. (EST) game on Friday, followed by a noon (EST) doubleheader on
Saturday.
