SOUTHWEST BASEBALL TEAM SWEEPS ROANE STATE
The Southwest baseball extended its winning streak to
six games with a sweep of Roane State in a three-game conference series at
Gagliano Field. On Friday afternoon, Collins Coltharp led off the bottom of
the ninth inning with a solo home run to give Southwest a 7-6 win.
In Saturday's first game, the Saluqis defeated Roane
State 2-1 as Preston Burleson singled in Brad Tillman with the winning run
in the bottom of the seventh after Tillman's one out triple. Jamie Carrico
(2-3) struck out 10 and allowed four hits in a complete game win. In the
second game of the doubleheader, Nick Smith went 3 for 3 with two doubles, a
home run (his 5th), and four runs batted in to lead Southwest to a 10-6
victory. Michael Steele (3-0) earned the win, allowing two hits and no runs
in four innings of relief.
Last Tuesday, Southwest swept Three Rivers in a
doubleheader, winning 7-3 and 5-2. Josh Meeker went 5 for 6 on the day and
was the winning pitcher in game one. Drew Buford earned saves in both games,
giving him four on the season and ten for his career – a new Southwest
record.
The wins improve the Saluqis' record to 14-8 overall
and 8-4 in the Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association.
Southwest hosts Coahoma on Tuesday, March 16 in a 3:00 p.m. game at Gagliano
Field. On Thursday, the Saluqis travel to Fulton, Mississippi to take on
Itawamba in a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader, then return home on Saturday, March 20
for a 3:00 p.m. twinbill against Sinclair.
