SOUTHWEST BASEBALL
TEAM WINS ONE OF THREE AT ROANE STATE
The Southwest baseball won one of three games in TJCCAA series over the
weekend at Roane State in Harriman, Tennessee, dropping the Saluqis’
record to 15-14 overall and 7-8 in the conference.
On
Friday afternoon, sophomore left-hander Shane Jackson upped his record
to 5-1 on the season, leading the Saluqis to a 10-2 victory. Jackson
scattered ten hits, walked one, and struck out six in a complete
nine-inning game. Sophomore designated hitter Brendan Murphy
(pictured at right) went 4 for 5 including a double, while freshman
catcher Jeremy Finney and sophomore second baseman Ryan Orr collected
three hits each.
Southwest was swept by Roane State in Saturday’s doubleheader by scores
of 2-1 and 3-0. The first game loss spoiled a fine pitching performance
by sophomore right-hander Josh Cowan, who allowed five hits and struck
out seven batters in six innings. In game one, Murphy was again the top
hitter with two base hits, including a double. In the final game of the
series, freshman right-hander Jason Adams had a solid outing as well,
allowing three runs in five innings. Top hitters for the Saluqis in this
game were freshman shortstop Clay Wright and sophomore third baseman
Brad Tillman with three hits apiece.
Idle in the TJCCAA this week, the Southwest baseball team will play
three non-conference games this week. On Wednesday, March 23, the Saluqis
travel to Muscle Shoals, Alabama to take on Northwest-Shoals in a 5 p.m.
single game. Southwest will play another out of conference opponent on
Thursday, March 24, when Southwest travels to Walnut Ridge, Arkansas for a 1
p.m. doubleheader against Williams Baptist.
