SALUQIS WIN FOUR GAMES LAST WEEK
The Southwest baseball team won four out of five games last week, including
a sweep of Coahoma Community College (MS), a split with Itawamba Community
College (MS), and a single game win over Sinclair Community College (OH).
Their record now stands at 18-9 overall and 8-4 in the Tennessee Junior and
Community College Athletic Association.
On Tuesday, Southwest defeated Coahoma in both games of a doubleheader at
Gagliano Field by scores of 9-8 and 15-3. In the first game, Southwest
scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth when Ryan Orr was hit
by the pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Brad Tillman. In the nightcap,
Kyle Watkins had two doubles and three RBI in a 10-run second inning for
Southwest.
Against Itawamba Thursday in Fulton, Mississippi, Josh Meeker went 2 for 3
with two runs batted in and was also the winning pitcher as the Saluqis won
the first game 3-2. Itawamba defeated Southwest in the second game 11-0,
ending the Saluqis' nine-game winning streak. Nick Smith was the Saluqis'
top hitter on the day with four hits in the two games.
Southwest defeated Sinclair 8-1 in a game shortened to five innings due to a
severe thunderstorm. Daniel Adams struck out eight batters and allowed only
four hits to earn his second win of the season. Leading the Saluqis' 11-hit
attack were Nick Smith and Collins Coltharp, who each had two hits, a
double, and two runs batted in. |
