SOUTHWEST BASEBALL TEAM WINS TWO OF THREE IN NON-CONFERENCE ACTION
The Southwest baseball team was idle in TJCCAA play this past week, but
played three games on the road, defeating Northwest-Shoals in a single
game and splitting a doubleheader with Williams Baptist.
On Wednesday, March 23, the Saluqis traveled to Muscle Shoals, Alabama
and defeated Northwest-Shoals 5-3 in a single nine-inning game. Top
hitters for Southwest were Clay Wright went 4 for 5 on the day, and
Brendan Murphy, who was 2 for 4 with three runs batted in. Starting
pitcher Darren Wills combined with relievers Sean James and Ivan Nails
to limit Northwest-Shoals to only six hits. Wills, who was the winning
pitcher, carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning.
The
Saluqis played Williams Baptist in a doubleheader on Thursday, March 24
in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. Southwest lost the first game 2-1 despite an
outstanding pitching performance by Shane Jackson, who allowed only four
hits in seven innings. In game two, Chris Rogers (pictured at right)
went 5 for 5 to lead Southwest to a 10-3 win. Other Saluqis with
multiple hits were John Thurston (3 for 4, 2 doubles, 3 RBI), Jeremy
Finney (3 for 5, 2 RBI), Clay Wright (2 for 4, double, 3 RBI), and Brit
Vincent (2 for 4, double).
Southwest will play Northwest Mississippi in a non-conference
doubleheader at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29 at Gagliano Field. The
Saluqis return to TJCCAA play this weekend, hosting Volunteer State in a
three-game series. The two teams will play a single game on Friday,
April 1 at 5 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, April
2.
