SOUTHWEST BASEBALL TEAM TAKES TWO OF THREE FROM CLEVELAND
The
Southwest baseball team won two of three games in a TJCCAA series against
Cleveland State over the weekend. On Friday, the Saluqis defeated Cleveland
State 15-4 at AutoZone Park then on Saturday the two teams split a
doubleheader at Tony Gagliano Memorial Field with Cleveland State winning
game one 3-2 and Southwest winning the nightcap 4-2. The Saluqis improved
their record to 11-7 on the year.
In Friday’s game, Southwest hammered out 15 hits and scored at least one run
in every inning. Philip Gibson led the offensive attack as he had three
doubles, a sacrifice fly and five runs batted in. Preston Burleson
(pictured at right) had three hits as he set the tone from the lead off
position, scoring four runs. Jon Thurston, Brett Jenne, Corey Rudolph and
Elvis Sosa each had two hits as well. Pitcher Jason Adams took a no-hitter
into the fifth inning and wound up going six strong innings while allowing
two earned runs. Adams improved his record to 3-1 on the year.
In Saturday’s first game, pitcher Darren Wills took a one hit shutout into
the seventh before tiring. Wills had nine strikeouts and allowed only two
hits in six innings of work. Cleveland State rallied for three runs in the
top of the seventh to take the lead and held on for the victory. The top
hitter for Southwest in game one was Jon Thurston who had two hits and drove
in two runs.
In game two, pitcher Ivan Nails went the distance on the mound as he hurled
a three hitter. The Southeast Missouri signee struck out five and improved
his season record to 2-1. Offensively for Southwest in the second game,
Preston Burleson was 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles and Josh Maurizi was 2
for 3 with a double.
