SALUQIS TRAVEL TO EAST TENNESSEE FOR
SERIES WITH NATIONALLY-RANKED WALTERS STATE
The Southwest Tennessee Community College baseball
team (21-16, 6-8) will travel to Morristown, Tennessee this weekend for a
three-game conference series with Walters State Community College, the
defending conference champions and the 16th-ranked team in the National
Junior College Athletic Association pre-season poll. Games times will be
2:00 p.m. on Friday (single game) and noon on Saturday (doubleheader.) (all
times are eastern) The Saluqis are currently 21-16 overall and 6-8 in
the Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association, while
Walters State enters this weekend with a 20-5 overall record and a 10-4
record in the TJCCAA.
Probable starting pitchers for Southwest are freshman
righthanders Michael Steele (4-2, 3.50 earned run average), Jamie Carrico
(3-2, 2.32 ERA), and Russell Wren (3-2, 1.48 ERA). The Saluqis, coached by
Doug Darnall and Johnny Ray, rank third in the conference with a 3.21 team
earned run average, and are fifth in batting with a .312 team average. They
are led at the plate by freshman catcher/designated hitter Nick Smith, who
is batting .385 with five home runs and 38 runs batted in. Other top hitters
for the Saluqis are freshman catcher/DH Jacob Whisenhunt (.356, two home
runs, 30 RBI), sophomore second baseman-left fielder Brandon Doss (.355, 15
stolen bases), sophomore centerfielder Patrick Williams (.328, 18 stolen
bases), and sophomore first baseman Jacob Barker (.323, 21 RBI.)
