SOUTHWEST BASEBALL
TEAM SWEEPS LAMBUTH JV,
LOSES TO WALTERS STATE
The Southwest baseball team was swept by Walters State over the
weekend in a three-game TJCCAA series in Morristown, Tennessee. The
Saluqis lost by scores of 12-6, 10-6, and 8-7. The losses dropped
Southwest’s record to 22-20 overall and 8-13 in the conference.
Top
hitters for the Saluqis in the series were Brit Vincent (7 for 12,
double, runs batted in), Matt Akin (pictured at right) (5 for 10,
double, 4 RBI), Jeremy Finney (5 for 11), Brendan Murphy (4 for 11,
double, home run, 3 RBI), and Phillip White (4 for 13, home run, RBI).
On Tuesday, Southwest swept Lambuth's junior varsity in a doubleheader
at Gagliano Field. In game one, Brit Vincent went 3 for 4 with a
double and two RBI to lead the Saluqis to a 9-2 victory. In the
nightcap, Jeremy Finney went 2 for 3 including an inside the park home
run and Brendan Murphy went 3 for 3 with a double, triple, and four RBI
as the Saluqis defeated Lambuth 14-0. Other top hitters against
Lambuth were Brad Tillman (3 for 5 in the two games), Ryan Orr (2 for 3
in game one), Nathan Mordecai (2 for 2 in game two), and Jon Scruggs (2
for 3 in game two). Darren Wills, the winning pitcher in game one,
allowed three hits and no runs in four innings while game two winner
Carl McKee allowed only one hit and no runs in three innings of work.
Southwest returns to action on Monday, April 11 when the Saluqis take on
East Central (MS) in a 3 p.m. doubleheader that will be played at Delta
State University in Cleveland, Mississippi. This weekend, Southwest will
host Chattanooga State in a three-game conference series at Gagliano
Field. A single game will be played at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 15
followed by a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, April 16.
