SOUTHWEST BASEBALL TEAM
SPLITS WITH ITAWAMBA, WINS ONE OF THREE AT CLEVELAND STATE
The Southwest baseball team split a doubleheader with Itawamba Community
College last Tuesday in Fulton, Mississippi, then won one of three games
over the weekend in a TJCCAA series at Cleveland State. The Saluqis' overall
record is currently 25-25 on the season, including 10-17 in the Tennessee
Junior and Community College Athletic Association.
Against
Itawamba, Matt Akin hit a grand slam home run and Clay Wright (pictured
at left) slammed two homers to lead the Saluqis to a 13-11 win in game
one. Wright went 3 for 4 in the game with three runs batted in. Collins
Coltharp also had multiple hits with a single and a double. Wright continued
his hot hitting in game two with two doubles while John Thurston went 3 for
3 with a double and one RBI but it wasn't enough as Southwest lost game two
6-4.
The Saluqis defeated Cleveland State 15-3 in the first game of the three
game series as Shane Jackson improved his record to 7-3 on the season.
Southwest lost the next two games to Cleveland State by scores of 3-2 and
5-4. Highlighting the second game of the series was a two-run triple by
Collins Coltharp. In the finale, Brit Vincent and Clay Wright each hit home
runs for Southwest.
This week, the Saluqis play a 3 p.m. single game at Coahoma Community
College in Clarksdale, Mississippi on Tuesday, April 26, followed by a
three-game TJCCAA series against Columbia State Community College at
Gagliano Field. Game times for the Columbia State series are a single game
at 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 30 and a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday, May 1.
These will be the final home games of the season for the Saluqis' baseball
team.
