SALUQIS POUND 26 HITS IN SERIES
FINALE
After losing the first two games of the three-game series, the Southwest
baseball team came back to defeat Columbia State 19-8 last weekend in
Columbia, Tennessee, pounding out a season-high 26 hits.
Every Saluqi starter had at least two hits, led by Ryan Orr, who went 4 for
6, and Preston Burleson, who went 4 for 5 and drove in five runs. Other
players with three hits were: Dustin Shields (3 for 4, 3 RBI), Nick
Smith (3 for 4, 3 doubles), Chris Rogers (3 for 6, 2 doubles, 2 RBI), and
Josh Meeker (3 for 5, double, 2 RBI). The win improved Southwest’s
record to 31-19 overall and 16-11 in the Tennessee Junior and Community
College Athletic Association. Southwest lost both ends of a doubleheader
Friday to Columbia State, 14-3 in the first game and a 5-4 10-inning loss in
the nightcap.
Other Saluqis with multiple hits were Dustin Shields (3 hits, 3 RBI), Nick
Smith (3 doubles), Chris Rogers (3 hits, 2 doubles), Josh Meeker (3 hits,
double), Wes Melton (2 hits, 3 RBI), Brit Vincent (2 hits, triple), and Mark
Schildmeier (2 hits, double). Charlie Ligon was the winning pitcher,
improving his record to 3-1 on the season. Jamie Carrico pitched three
shutout innings in relief to earn his first save of the season.
Southwest will host Dyersburg State in the final conference series of the
season this weekend at Tony Gagliano Memorial Field. The two teams will play
a single game April 30, beginning at 6 p.m., followed by a 5 p.m.
