SALUQIS TAKE TWO
OF THREE FROM COLUMBIA STATE,
CARRICO TOSSES NO-HITTER
The Southwest baseball team won two of three games against Columbia
State over the weekend at Tony Gagliano Memorial Field, led by
outstanding pitching from a freshman and a sophomore hurler.
On
Saturday afternoon, Jamie Carrico (pictured at right) pitched a
no-hitter as the Saluqis won the first game 1-0. Carrico, a
freshman from Bolton High School, walked three batters, struck out
one, and allowed only one base runner to reach second base. Reggie
Huguet doubled home pinch runner Tyler Lee with the winning run with
two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
In game two on Saturday, Columbia State defeated the Saluqis by a 5-4
score. Despite the loss, Saluqis pitchers still had a solid outing,
allowing only one earned run.
On
Sunday afternoon in the rubber game of the three-game series, Scott
Nobles (pictured at left) pitched the best game of his career as
the Saluqis defeated Columbia State 2-1. Nobles, a sophomore from
Henderson, Kentucky, allowed no earned runs, no walks, and struck out
five batters in 8-2/3 innings. Drew Buford relieved Nobles with two
outs in the ninth inning, striking out the only batter he faced to end
the game and earn his team-high fourth save of the season.
The win improved the Saluqis' record to 30-21 overall and 13-13 in the
Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association. This
marks the fourth straight season the Saluqis have won at least 30
games, the first time in the program's history this has been done.
Congratulations to coaches Doug Darnall and Johnny Ray and all of the
Saluqis' players for a job well done! |
