SALUQIS LOSE TWICE IN
TJCCAA/REGION VII TOURNAMENT TO END SEASON
The Southwest baseball team lost two games in the Tennessee Junior
and Community College/Region VII baseball tournament in Columbia,
Tennessee, ending the season with a 32-24 overall record.
In the opening round game, the Saluqis were defeated 4-2 by Cleveland
State. Southwest fell behind 2-0 in the third inning as Cleveland
State took advantage of two Saluqi errors. The game remained 2-0 until
the top of the seventh, when Southwest got on the board after Nick
Smith led off with a double and later scored on a base hit by Jacob
Barker. Cleveland State added two runs in the bottom of the seventh to
make the score 4-1. The Saluqis then scored another run in the eighth
as Patrick Williams drove in Dustin Shields, who led off the inning
with an infield hit. Despite the loss, Jamie Carrico pitched
another outstanding game, allowing only two earned runs and striking
out seven in 6-1/3 innings.
The loss sent the Saluqis to the loser's bracket for a game against
Volunteer State, the regular season conference champion that had lost
its first round game against Jackson State. Vol State scored five runs
in the top of the first inning and never looked back as the Pioneers
defeated the Southwest 12-0, ending the Saluqis' season. |
