SOUTHWEST BASEBALL
TEAM TAKES TWO OF THREE FROM COLUMBIA STATE TO WRAP UP REGULAR SEASON
The Southwest baseball team defeated Columbia State twice in a
three-game series over the weekend at Gagliano Field in the final games
of the regular season. The Saluqis improved their overall record to
29-26 and their conference record to 12-18.
In
the first game, pitcher Shane Jackson (pictured at right)
improved his record to 8-3 on the year as Southwest defeated Columbia
State 9-2. Jackson scattered eight hits and allowed only one earned run
in 7-1/3 innings of work. Leading the 15-hit attack were Jeremy Finney
(3 for 5, double, RBI), Brit Vincent (3 for 4, double), and Brendan
Murphy (2 for 5, double, 3 RBI).
The Saluqis also won game two, defeating Columbia State by a 10-3
margin. Southwest continued its hot hitting, pounding out 13 hits in the
game. Leading the team were Murphy (3 for 4, double, RBI) and Jonathan
Thurston (2 for 3, 3 RBI). Josh Cowan was the winning pitcher, allowing
only four hits and striking out six batters in six innings. Southwest
lost the final game of the series 6-4, despite another outstanding game
by Vincent, who had three hits in the game and was 7 for 12 in the
series.
