SALUQIS WIN TWO OF THREE
AT DYERSBURG TO END REGULAR SEASON
The Southwest baseball team defeated Dyersburg State twice in a
three-game series over the weekend in Dyersburg, Tennessee. On Friday
afternoon, freshmen pitchers Jamie Carrico, Shane Jackson, and Drew
Buford combined to shut out Dyersburg State 2-0. Carrico, who pitched
a no-hitter last week against Columbia State, threw the first eight
innings before giving way to Jackson in the ninth. After a scoreless
nine innings by both teams, the Saluqis scored two runs in the top of
the tenth on a two-run single by Chris Brock. Jackson started the
bottom of the tenth, but was relieved by Buford with one on and two
out. After
walking two batters to load the bases, Buford retired the Eagles'
leadoff hitter on a fly ball to end the game. Jackson was the winning
pitcher, improving his record to 3-1; while Buford picked up his fifth
save of the season.
The two teams split a doubleheader on Saturday with Dyersburg State
winning the first game 5-4, and Southwest taking the second game 7-6.
Dusty Harris had an outstanding game for the Saluqis, driving in two
runs with a triple in the second inning. Then after Chris Brock hit a
two-run homer in the fourth, Harris went back to back with his third
home run of the season. The winner was Scott Nobles (6-2), while
Buford earned his second save in two days and his sixth of the season.
Centerfielder Patrick Williams was the Saluqis' top hitter in the
series with eight hits in 13 at-bats for a .615 batting average.
The Saluqis ended the regular season with a 32-22 overall record and a
15-14 record in the Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic
Association. Next up for Southwest is the TJCCAA/Region VII
Tournament, beginning this Wednesday in Columbia, Tennessee. |
