SALUQIS' BASEBALL TEAM ENDS
SEASON WITH 33-23 RECORD
The Southwest baseball team was defeated 11-7 by Cleveland State
in the third round of the TJCCAA/NJCAA Region VII Tournament, ending
the Saluqis' season. Southwest finished with a 33-23 overall
record, the sixth time in the last seven years the Saluqis have won
at least 30 games.
In the loss to Cleveland State, Josh
Maurizi (pictured at left) went 4 for 5 with two home runs for the Saluqis. Also with
multiple hits were Philip Gibson, Elvis Sosa, Brent Moss, and Matt
Akin.
After losing to Dyersburg State 4-0 in a
first round game, Southwest remained alive in the tournament with a 6-4
win over Jackson State. Darren Wills was the winning pitcher, improving
his record to 6-5 on the season. Wills allowed six hits and struck out
five in 7-2/3 innings before giving way to Chris Crenshaw, who retired
the final four outs to earn his second save of the year.
Josh Maurizi went 3 for 3, scored two runs
and drove in a run in the win over Jackson State. Other top
hitters for Southwest were Matt Akin, who had two hits with 2 RBI and
Brent Moss who had a single and a double.
