FORMER HIGH SCHOOL ALL-AMERICAN BRENDAN MURPHY TRANSFERRING TO SOUTHWEST
Brendan Murphy, a former High School All-American and Gatorade State
Player of the Year in Tennessee, has signed a National Letter of Intent to
play baseball at Southwest. Murphy, a first baseman/outfielder, is
transferring to Southwest from Garden City (KS) Community College, where
he hit .294 with eight home runs and 36 runs batted in as a freshman in
2004.
“We are pleased to have Brendan in our program,” said Southwest coach
Johnny Ray. “He will be a legitimate power presence in the middle of our
lineup and I expect him to be a team leader.”
Murphy, who prepped at Grace Baptist Academy in Chattanooga, was a 30th
round pick by the Montreal Expos in the 2004 Major League Draft after
being selected in the 37th round by the Expos last year. As a
high school senior in 2003, Murphy batted .630 with 13 home runs and 44
RBI, was named to the Sports Writers and Tennessee Baseball Report
All-State teams, the Chattanooga Times/Free Press All-City team, and to
the Baseball America All-American team. He was also a four-time
all-district performer, was voted district MVP as a junior and senior, and
played in the 2003 Tennessee-Georgia All-Star Game.
