SOUTHWEST BASEBALL TEAM SIGNS BENNETT
Taylor Bennett, a right-handed pitcher from
Covington who was selected in the 2004 Major League Baseball draft by the
San Diego Padres, has signed a Letter of Intent to play baseball at
Southwest.
“Taylor is a tremendous talent,” said Saluqis’ head coach Johnny Ray. “We
are thrilled to have someone with his ability coming into our program. In
Taylor, we have an immediate number one starter and someone who brings
some big game experience to the table.”
Bennett is transferring to Southwest from Okaloosa-Walton Community
College in Niceville, Florida, where he attended during the spring of
2004. He played his high school ball at Covington High School, where he
was coached by Allen Pavatte and Geno Miller. Bennett was a four-time
all-district and all-region selection in high school, and was named to
The Commercial Appeal’s Best
of the Preps Team. In addition, Bennett was regarded as one of the
Mid-South’s top prospects and was selected as one of the state’s top ten
by Baseball America.
As a senior, he posted a 7-2 record with a 2.24 earned average and 66
strikeouts in 56-1/3 innings. His junior year, Bennett went 6-5 with a
0.89 ERA and 94 strikeouts. He tossed a pair of no-hitters as a
sophomore, compiling a 4-3 record and a 2.13 ERA and as a freshman went
8-5 with 88 strikeouts and a 2.51 ERA in helping CHS to the 2000 Class AA
State Runner-up. In the summer of 2002, Bennett posted a perfect 8-0
record for the Dulin’s Dodgers and was the winning pitcher in the AAU
18-and-under National Championship Game.
