SOUTHWEST OPENS FALL BASEBALL SEASON WITH RED-BLUE GAME
The Southwest baseball team, under the direction of third-year head
coach Johnny Ray, will open the 2005 fall season with the Red-Blue
Intersquad Game on Monday, August 29 at Tony Gagliano Memorial Field. The
Saluqis will play approximately 20 games this fall, including the Southwest
Tennessee Fall Showcase on September 30-October 1 and the Third Annual
Nostalgia Man Classic at Auto Zone Park on October 8-9.
In addition to the Southwest Showcase, the Saluqis will compete in
junior college showcases at the University of West Alabama (Demopolis, AL),
Middle Tennessee State University (Murfreesboro, TN), Delta State University
(Cleveland, MS), and Belhaven College (Jackson, MS). Southwest will also
play games this fall at Northwest Mississippi Community College (Senatobia,
MS), Ouachita Baptist University (Arkadelphia, AR), and Arkansas Tech
University (Russellville, AR).
Ray has guided the Saluqis to a 69-49 record in two seasons, including
the 2004 Region VII tournament championship. Top players returning off the
2005 squad are first baseman Matt Akin, second baseman Jeremy Finney, third
baseman Clay Wright, and right-handed pitcher Ivan Nails.
Akin batted .354 as a freshman with 18 doubles and 30 runs batted in and
was one of the team’s top fielders with a .990 average. Finney batted .337
last spring with a team-leading 20 stolen bases and was named to the
Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association Fantastic Freshman team. Wright, who
was honorable mention All-TJCCAA, batted .386 as a freshman with seven home
runs, 38 RBI, and a team-leading 21 doubles. Nails, a second team All-TJCCAA
pick by the TBCA, compiled a 2-2 pitching record with a 4.28 earned run
average and a team-high six saves.
