SALUQIS’ BASEBALL TEAM WINS TWO
GAMES IN THE SOUTHWEST SHOWCASE
The Southwest baseball team won two of four
games over the weekend in the Southwest Fall Showcase, defeating Lincoln
Trail (IL) 8-5 and Coahoma (MS) 6-0, and losing to Holmes (MS) 9-6 and
Northeast Mississippi 10-9.
In the Lincoln Trail game, the Saluqis’ scored five runs in the sixth
inning to come from behind from a 4-3 deficit and win the game. John
Thurston, Brad Tillman, Wes Melton, and Brett Jenne had (four)
back-to-back hits in the inning. Starting pitcher Jason Adams pitched
shutout three innings, while winning pitcher Ivan Nails allowed only one
run in three innings of work.
Top hitters for the Saluqis on
the weekend were Jeremy Finney, who led off the Lincoln Trail game with a
triple, T.J. Kemp, who homered against Northeast Mississippi, and
Thurston, who homered against Holmes. Brendan Murphy also hit a triple
with two runs batted in against Northeast.
Southwest’s next game will be on Wednesday, September 22, when the Saluqis
take on Crichton College at 4 p.m. at Sowell Field (on Mt. Moriah next to
Gagliano Field.) On Saturday, September 25, the Saluqis will participate
in the Worth Junior College Fall Classic at Middle Tennessee State
University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Southwest will play TJCCAA rivals
Volunteer State at 3:30 p.m. and Walters State at 6:15 p.m.
