The Southwest
Tennessee Community College baseball team opens the 2002 season this
Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Northwest Shoals Community
College in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The Saluqis' home opener will be this
Sunday against Shawnee (IL) Community College. The 1:00 p.m.
doubleheader will be held at Tony Gagliano Memorial Field on Mt. Moriah.
Coach Doug Darnall returns seven players off last
year's 30-21 team, led by sophomore pitcher-infielder Corey Kines, who
led the team with eight wins as a freshman, and also led the team with a
.364 batting average. Other returning players are pitcher-first baseman
David McQuilliams, pitchers Kevin Clark and Drew Parr, catcher Andrew
Vescovi, and outfielders Kayo Anderson and Steve McDermott. Also back is
pitcher Chad Gean, who sat out last season with an injury after starting
as a freshman in 2000.
A top newcomer is freshman outfielder Patrick
Williams, who along with Kines was listed in 'Collegiate Baseball'
magazine as a 'Player to Watch' this season in junior college baseball.
Other top first-year players include catcher Jacob Barker, infielder
Chris Brock, outfielder Dusty Harris, and pitcher Steven Miller.
