The Southwest
Tennessee Community College baseball team swept Jackson State Community
College in a doubleheader by scores of 9-4 and 2-1 Tuesday at Tony
Gagliano Memorial Field. The two wins improved the Saluqis record to
20-12 overall and 4-3 in the West Division of the Tennessee
Junior/Community College Athletic Association.
In game one, pitcher Corey Kines scattered nine
hits over seven innings and struck out five batters to earn his fourth
win of the season. Kines also went 3 for 4 at the plate to lead the
Saluqi hitters. Southwest held only a one-run lead (3-2) before
exploding for six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, highlighted by
two-run singles by Patrick Williams and Chris Brock.
Joseph Fortner's two-out solo home run in the
bottom of the sixth inning gave the Saluqis the victory in the nightcap.
David McQuilliams pitched an outstanding game, allowing only five hits
and striking out six in 6-1/3 innings. Drew Parr retired the final two
batters to pick up the save.
Southwest travels to Gallatin, Tennessee this
weekend to take on Volunteer State Community College, a perennial power
in the TJCCAA. Gametimes will be 4:00 p.m. Friday (doubleheader) and
1:00 p.m. Saturday (single game). The next home game for the Saluqis
