The Southwest
Tennessee Community College baseball team will play Motlow State
Community College in the first round of the Region VII Baseball
Tournament this Saturday (May 4) at 4:00 p.m. at Columbia, Tennessee.
The Saluqis enter the tournament with an overall record of 29-21 and
finished third in the West Division of the Tennessee Junior/Community
College Athletic Association with a 10-10 record. The winner of
theSouthwest-Motlow game will play at 7 p.m. Sunday against the winner
ofthe Columbia State-Chattanooga State game, while the losers of the
twogames will play at 1 p.m.The Saluqis,
coached by Doug Darnall and Johnny Ray, are seeking their 30th win of
the season against Motlow State. Southwest has reached the30-win plateau
in each of the past two seasons, and a third straight 30-win season
would be the first time since the 1976-78 seasons.
Southwest is led by sophomore pitcher-infielder
Corey Kines, who leadsthe team with a 3.39 earned run average and a .357
batting average.Kines also leads the team with 13 doubles, 56 hits, 23
walks, and a .446on-base average, and posts a 5-4 pitching record.
Other top sophomoreplayers for the Saluqis are: pitcher Drew Parr (5-6
record, 4.38 era),pitcher Chad Gean (6-2 record, 5.36 era), designated
hitter WalkerUhlhorn (.352, 5 home runs, 28 runs batted in), and third
baseman JosephFortner (.316, 4 hr, 17 rbi). Top freshman for Southwest
this year are:centerfielder Patrick Williams (.312, 46 runs scored, 26
stolen bases),infielder Brett Beckwith (.323, 20 sb), infielder Chris
Brock (.315, 18rbi), catcher Jacob Barker (.275, 8 hr, 39 rbi), pitcher
Scott Nobles(4-3 record, 4.83 era), and outfielders Wes Daniels (.312, 3
hr, 27rbi), and Dusty Harris (.286, 6 hr, 24 rbi).
