The Southwest
Tennessee Community College baseball team won two of three games at
Volunteer State Community College over the weekend to move into second
place in the West Division of the TJCCAA. The wins improved the Saluqis'
record to 22-13 overall and 6-4 in the conference.
Southwest won the series opener on Friday by a 4-2
score. Dusty Harris hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning to give the
Saluqis a 2-0 lead, then after Vol State tied the game at 2-2, Harris
led off the top of the seventh with a double, then scored the go-ahead
run on a ground ball by Chris Brock. Brock then scored the fourth run of
the game on Hank Pitts' RBI single. Drew Parr pitched a complete game to
earn his fifth win of the season, striking out five batters and walking
none in seven innings.
In the nightcap on Friday, Southwest jumped to an
8-2 lead after five innings and held on to win 9-8, withstanding a
four-run rally by Vol State in the bottom of the seventh inning. Wes
Daniels' three-run home run broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning, then
Jacob Barker's three-run homer highlighted a four-run fifth inning that
gave the Saluqis a six-run lead. Chad Gean picked up his fifth win of
the season, allowing four hits and striking out three in four innings of
work.
In the series finale on Saturday afternoon, Vol
State's Brent Adcock shut down the Saluqis, allowing only four hits and
striking out 13 batters in the Pioneers' 5-0 win.
Southwest returns to action on Wednesday afternoon
with a trip to Senatobia, Mississippi to take on Northwest Mississippi
Community College in a 1:00 p.m. non-conference game. The Saluqis are
home this weekend with a three-game series against Columbia State, the
top team in the TJCAAA West with a 7-0 conference record. Game times
will be 4:00 p.m. (doubleheader) on Friday, with a 1:00 p.m. single game
on Saturday. All home games are held at Tony Gagliano Memorial Field on
Mt. Moriah.
