SOUTHWEST BASEBALL TEAM ENDS SEASON, WINS ' 30 ' FOR THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR |
| The 2002 season came
to a close for the Southwest Tennessee Community College baseball team
as the Saluqis finished fifth in the Tennessee Junior/Community College
Region 7 tournament at Columbia, Tennessee. Southwest lost to Western
Division runnerup Motlow State in the opener by a score of 8-0, then
defeated Chattanooga State 13-6, and lost to Volunteer State 11-1 to end
the season. Against Chattanooga, the Saluqis pounded out 19 hits, led by
Chris Brock, Walker Uhlhorn, and Brett Beckwith with three hits each.
After falling behind 4-0, Southwest tied the game with four runs in the
fourth inning, then erupted for eight in the fifth to take the lead.
Freshman pitcher Scott Nobles picked up the win in relief, allowing one
hit and striking out five in 2-2/3 innings.
The Saluqis, coached by Doug Darnall and Johnny
Ray, reached the 30-win plateau with the win over Chattanooga State. It
was the third straight 30-win season for the team, marking only the
second time in the program's 30-year history that a Saluqis' team had
won 30 games in three consecutive seasons. The only other time was under
coach Joe Platt from the 1976-78 seasons.
