SOUTHWEST BASKETBALL TEAMS HOST
SAINT CATHARINE
After a few weeks off for the holidays, the Southwest basketball teams
return to action on Saturday, January 15 against Saint Catharine College
at the Verties Sails Gymnasium. The women’s game will tip-off at 6 p.m.,
followed by the men at 8 p.m. This will be the first of ten games
against teams in the Western Division of the Tennessee Junior and
Community College Athletic Association.
The Southwest men enter the game at 10-5 overall and 4-2 in the
conference. The Saluqis haven’t played since December 17-18, when they
defeated Cincinnati State and Kennedy-King to win the Willie Little
Classic in Chicago. Southwest is led in scoring by freshman guard
Anthony “A.J. Pigram (Trezevant High School), who is averaging 12.7
points per game and also leads the team with 41 three-point field goals.
Also scoring in double figures for the Saluqis are a pair of freshmen
from Central High School in Memphis. Forward Moraye Ivy is averaging
10.9 points per game, while guard Lester Hudson is averaging 10.7 points
and leads the team in rebounding with a 6.7 average. Sophomore guard
Nick Covington (Little Rock, AR), who is averaging 7.7 points, is coming
off a 35-point outburst in the Saluqis’ win over Kennedy-King.
The Lady Saluqis, also 10-5 overall, enter the game tied for first place
in the Western Division of the TJCCAA with a 3-3 record. They are led by
sophomore forward Ashley Mason (Trezevant High School), who is averaging
a team-high 15.1 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. Mason’s 15-foot
jumper with 1.8 seconds remaining gave Southwest the win over Mineral
Area in the team’s last game (on December 28) in the second round of the
Lady Saluqis Classic. Other top scorers are freshman guard Kenya Moore
(Blytheville, AR), who is averaging 11.7 points and 5.3 rebounds, and
sophomore guard Lakeisha Jackson (Booker T. Washington High School), who
carries a 10.4 scoring average. Forward Imesia Jackson (Crawford, MS),
one of the top freshmen in the entire conference when healthy, has
battled injuries much of the season but is still averaging 9.7 points
and 7.5 rebounds per game.
The Saint Catharine men are currently 9-3 on the season and 4-2 in the
conference and have been nationally-ranked this season. The Saint
Catharine women are 7-7 overall and 2-4 in the conference, and feature
the nation’s second leading scorer in Heather Taylor, who is averaging
over 22 points per game. |
