LADY SALUQIS RISE TO SEVENTH IN NJCAA POLL

The Southwest women’s basketball team, undefeated with an 11-0 overall record, moved up two spots to number seven in this week’s National Junior College Athletic Association Division 1 Poll. The Lady Saluqis are 6-0 in the Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association, defeating all six of the conference’s Eastern Division teams in November and December.

Their next game will be against Arkansas Baptist College at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, January 15 at the Verties Sails Gymnasium. It will be the final non-conference game of the season for the Lady Saluqis, who return to TJCCAA play on Wednesday, January 23 on the road against Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin, Tennessee.

Candace Rucker, a 5’9” sophomore guard from Northside High School, is the team’s leading scorer at 22.0 points per game which ranks her first in the conference and fourth in the NJCAA. Rucker also leads the conference and is third in the NJCAA with 5.1 steals per game. Post player Starkitsha Luellen, a 6’0” sophomore from Melrose High School, is the second leading scorer with a 12.4 average and leads the team and the TJCCAA in rebounding at 10.9 per game.
