The Southwest basketball teams resume conference
play Tuesday night (January 21), when the Saluqis and Lady Saluqis
take on Dyersburg State Community College. The women's game is
scheduled for a 6:00 p.m tipoff, followed by the men at approximately
8:00 at the Verties Sails Gymnasium.
The Saluqis are coming off an impressive 97-73
win over Kennedy-King College on January 4, a game in which thirteen
different players scored. Coach Verties Sails' men's team is currently
12-4 overall and 6-0 in the Tennessee Junior and Community College
Athletic Association. On the season, only two players are averaging
more than 10 points per game - sophomore guard Ben Mitchum (10.6) and
sophomore center Toriano Stokes (10.2), both of whom come off the
bench. However, eight other players are scoring at least 7.0 points
per game on a very balanced squad which scores at a conference best
90.9 points per contest. Stokes also leads the team in rebounding with
a 6.9 average, while sophomore point guard Brian Kizzie is the assist
(5.6) and steals (1.5) leader.
The Lady Saluqis last played December 28-30 in
the Illinois Central Tournament in East Peoria, Illinois. In the
tournament, the Southwest women won one of three games, defeating Lake
Michigan College, and losing to Kirkwood (IA) Community College and
Salt Lake (UT) Community College. The Lady Saluqis, coached by Andrea
Martre, are currently 5-9 overall and 0-6 in the TJCCAA. They are led
by sophomore guard Larisha Graves, who averages 14.3 points, 3.8
assists, and 2.8 steals - all team highs. Other top players for the
Southwest women are: freshman center Tiffany Webb (7.1 points, 5.9
rebounds), freshman forward Kaia Richardson (6.1 points, 4.8
rebounds), and sophomore guards Christhol McClain (5.6 points) and
Marsheka Suttles (5.0 points).
