SOUTHWEST BASKETBALL TEAMS SWEEP JACKSON
STATE
The Southwest men’s and women’s basketball teams continued their
excellent play of late with a sweep of Jackson State Community College on
Saturday afternoon in Jackson, Tennessee.
The
men’s team, which is currently ranked 18th in the latest National
Junior College Athletic Association poll, were led by Lester Hudson’s
(pictured at right) 24 points and 10 rebounds as the Saluqis defeated
Jackson State 94-85. Other top performers for Southwest were Anthony Pigram
(19 points), Greg Grimes (15 points, 9 rebounds), and Moraye Ivy (9 points,
8 rebounds). The win improved the Saluqis’ record to 15-3 overall and 12-2
in the Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association (TJCCAA).
Four
Lady Saluqi players scored in double figures as the Southwest women defeated
Jackson State 70-55. Imesia Jackson (12), Porshia Willis (11), Priscilla
Campbell (11), and Tonya Walker (10 (pictured at left) all scored at
least ten points, while Gina High was the leading rebounder with a
career-high 11 boards, all on the defensive end of the floor. Down 40-38 at
the half, The Southwest women outscored Jackson State 32-15 in the second
half while holding Jackson State to only 17 percent shooting from the field.
The Lady Saluqis improved to 11-7 overall and 8-6 in the TJCCAA and have won
seven of their last eight games.
Both teams return to action this weekend at the Verties Sails Gymnasium
against Saint Catharine College on Friday night and Columbia State Community
College on Saturday afternoon. Friday’s women’s game will tip-off at 6
p.m., followed by the men at 8 p.m. Saturday’s game times are 2 p.m.
(women) and 4 p.m. (men).
