Southwest Basketball Schedule Set For 2003-2004 Season

Southwest is proud to present the 2003-2004 basketball schedules for the men’s and women’s teams. “As always, our schedule is very challenging,” said Athletic Director and Head Men’s Basketball Coach Verties Sails Jr.  “We’re building toward post-season competition. The teams on our schedule are good teams, several of them playing in the national tournament last year.”   This will be Sails’ 25th season with the Southwest Saluqis.

The Lady Saluqis are coached by Andrea Martre, who is entering her eighth year at Southwest. "As usual, our non-conference schedule is tough.  A five-game road trip early in the season will be very challenging for this year's team.  In addition, we're hosting the Lady Saluqis Classic this year, with Mineral Area College, Jefferson College, and Kennedy-King College, all very competitive teams."

Featured on this year’s non-conference slate for both the men and women are two games each against Coahoma Community College, Northwest Mississippi Community College, and Southeastern Illinois College.  The Southwest men also play a home game against Kennedy-King College, while the women host Itawamba Community College.  In addition, the women’s team will host the Lady Saluqis Classic at the Verties Sails Gymnasium in late December.

Southwest competes in the Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association and Region VII of the National Junior College Athletic Association.   Both the Saluqis and Lady Saluqis will play a 16-game conference schedule, with two games each against TJCCAA/Region VII Western Division members Columbia State, Dyersburg State, Jackson State, Saint Catharine (KY), and Volunteer State.  Southwest will also play single games against Eastern Division schools Chattanooga State, Cleveland State, Hiwassee, Motlow State, Roane State, and Walters State.

The Southwest men’s team finished the 2002-2003 season with an outstanding 24-8 record, winning the TJCCAA/Region VII championship and advancing to the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas.  The Southwest women’s team compiled an 11-14 record last season, finishing third in the TJCCAA Western Division.
