BASKETBALL TEAMS OPEN SEASON AGAINST SALUQI ALUMNI
The Southwest men’s and women’s basketball teams will
open the 2007-2008 season with an exhibition game
against the Saluqi and Lady Saluqi alumni on Thursday,
October 25 at the Verties Sails Gymnasium on the Union
Avenue Campus. The women’s game will begin at 6 p.m.,
followed by the men’s game at 8 p.m. The games will
feature this year’s squads against teams composed of
former Southwest players. Tickets are $5 for adults
(including students) and $2 for children age 12 and
under.
“This will probably be the toughest game we play all
year,” said Southwest Athletic Director and Head Men’s
Basketball Coach Verties Sails Jr. “We’ll be competing
against some of the greatest players to ever play here
at Southwest.”
The men’s team, coached by Verties Sails, Jr., is ranked
nationally in two pre-season polls – 10th by The
Sporting News and 13th by the
National Junior College Athletic Association. The
Saluqis return three part-time starters from last year’s
28-7 team that won the TJCCAA and Region VII
championships and finished 8th in the NJCAA national
tournament. Players returning from last year are 5’11”
point guard Emmanuel Cheers, 6’0” shooting guard Antonio
Young, and 6’5” forward A.J. Nance, a second team
pre-season All-American selection by the NJCAA.
Coach Andrea Martre's Lady Saluqis return six players
off last season’s 26-2 team that won the TJCCAA Western
Division title and was ranked 13th in the final NJCAA
poll. Returning off the 2006-07 squad are 6’1” forward
Keona Brooks, 5’9” guard Daumonique Lenhardt, 6’0”
center Starkitsha Luellen, 6’0” forward Jessica Parks,
5’5” guard Tiffany Simpson, and 5’7” guard Ashley
