BASKETBALL TEAMS TO TAKE ON ALUMNI
The 2005-2006 Southwest men’s and women’s basketball teams will compete
against the Saluqi Alumni on Saturday, October 29 in the newly renovated
Verties Sails Gymnasium on the Union Avenue Campus. The women’s game will
begin at 6 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 8 p.m. The games will feature
this year’s squads against teams composed of former Saluqis and Lady Saluqis.
Tickets are $5 for adults (including students) and $2 for children age 12
and under.
“Both the men’s and women’s games will be very competitive,” said Saluqis’
head coach and athletic director Verties Sails Jr. “We’ve got our hands
full. This will be one of the toughest games we play all year. We’ll be
playing against former players who’ve led us to national tournaments and
some are still playing professionally.”
Prior
to the games, Southwest is hosting an open house from 4 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. to
celebrate the gym renovation. So far, the renovation has included a
brand-new NBA floor and new chair-back seats on the lower level and new
bleacher seats on the upper level. Also planned are a new weight room, new
concession stand and a media room. All Memphis area high school and college
athletic directors and basketball coaches are invited to attend the open
house, as well as Southwest Foundation Board Members and contributors to the
renovation project.
“We’d like to see as many people as possible to attend the open house and
festivities before the game,” said Sails. “We would certainly like to see a
full house for the game to show support for the former players who have
moved on and also to see how our young teams will match up against them.”
The Saluqis and Lady Saluqis open the 2005-2006 regular season on Tuesday,
November 1 when Southwest hosts Coahoma Community College at the Verties
Sails Gymnasium.
