SOUTHWEST BASKETBALL TEAMS SPLIT WITH ALUMNI

The 2005-2006 Southwest basketball teams split a doubleheader with the Alumni teams on Saturday night at the Verties Sails Gymnasium with the Lady Saluqis winning 87-75 and the Saluqis losing 111-110.  It was the final tune-up for both teams before the regular season opener against Coahoma Community College on Tuesday, November 1 at the Verties Sails Gymnasium.

Ashley Shields scored 25 points and grabbed 20 rebounds, and Imesia Jackson (pictured at right) added 23 points and nine boards to lead the Southwest women.   Shields made 7 of 12 field goal attempts and 10 for 10 from the free throw line, and also dished out six assists.  Jackson made 9 of 11 field goals and 5 of 7 free throws and also led the team with four steals.  Other top performers for the Lady Saluqis were Brittany Smith (10 points), Tonya Walker (9 points, 7 rebounds), and Porshia Willis (7 assists).  Leading the Alumni team with 18 points each were Nikkia Jones and Myquita Mackey, who also was the leading rebounder with 10.

In the men’s game, Anthony “A.J.” Pigram (pictured at left) scored 21 points to lead six Southwest players who scored in double figures.  Pigram, who was the Saluqis’ leading scorer last season and also made the all-conference team, came off the bench to make five three-point field goals in only 22 minutes of play.  Other top players for Southwest were Anthony Barbee (15 points, team-high 8 rebounds), Moraye Ivy (14 points), Lester Hudson (14 points, 4 assists, 3 steals), Greg Grimes (10 points), Thomas Jackson (10 points), and Donald Boone (6 assists, 5 steals).  The leading scorers for the Alumni team were Marlon Walls with 30 points, Cortez Stigger with 24 points, and Arthur Faulkner with 16 points.
