SOUTHWEST SWEEPS ALUMNI
IN EXHIBITION GAMES, OPENS REGULAR SEASON WEDNESDAY
Both the Southwest men’s and women’s basketball teams opened the
2006-2007 season with exhibition wins last Friday at the Verties Sails
Gymnasium against teams composed of former Saluqi and Lady Saluqi
players.
Sophomore
guard Ashley Shields (pictured at right) scored 20 points,
grabbed 11 rebounds, and dished out eight assists to lead the Lady
Saluqis to an 83-60 win over the Alumni. Also scoring in double figures
for the Southwest women were freshman forward Keona Brooks with 12 and
sophomore guard Gina High with 11. Sophomore forward Britany Sublett
added four points and 10 rebounds.
In
the men’s game, sophomore guard Dominique Johnson (pictured at left)
scored 23 points to lead the Saluqis to a 119-93 victory. Other players
who had outstanding games against the Alumni were freshman forward A.J.
Nance (17 points), sophomore guard Dontae Figgs (15 points, 10
rebounds), sophomore guard Donald Boone (13 points), and freshman center
Lance Smith (14 rebounds).
Southwest will open the regular season on Wednesday, November 1 against
Coahoma Community College at the Verties Sails Gymnasium on the Union
Avenue Campus. The women’s game will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the
men’s game at 8 p.m.
