SOUTHWEST BASKETBALL TEAMS HOST COAHOMA IN
REGULAR SEASON OPENER
The 2005-2006 season will officially get under way for the Southwest
basketball teams on Tuesday night, November 1 when the Saluqis and Lady
Saluqis host Coahoma Community College at the Verties Sails Gymnasium. The
women’s game is scheduled to tip-off at 6 p.m., followed by the men at 8
p.m.
Both
the men’s and the women’s teams have played two exhibition games in
preparation for the upcoming season. The Lady Saluqis won both games,
defeating the State Liners 73-62 and the Alumni 87-75.
Leading the team in scoring and rebounding in both games was sophomore
Ashley Shields (pictured at right), who averaged 22.0 points and 16.0
rebounds including 25 points and 20 rebounds in the Alumni game. Other top
performers for the Lady Saluqis in the pre-season were sophomores Imesia
Jackson (18.0 points, 8.0 rebounds) and Porshia Willis (5.0 assists), and
freshman Tonya Walker (11.0 points, 7.0 reb).
The
Saluqis were 1-1 in the two games, defeating the Spirit Express 125-78 and
losing to the Alumni 111-110. Sophomore Lester Hudson (pictured at left)
led the team in scoring and rebounding in the two games, averaging 21.0
points and 8.0 rebounds. Also averaging in double figures for the Saluqis
were sophomores Anthony Pigram (15.0 points), Moraye Ivy (11.0 points), and
Anthony Barbee (10.5 points), and freshman Greg Grimes (9.5 points).
