SOUTHWEST SWEEPS NORTHWEST MISSISSIPPI
The Southwest basketball teams swept Northwest Mississippi on Tuesday
night at the Verties Sails Gymnasium with the women winning 83-75 and the
men 125-101. Both teams improved to 3-0 on the season heading into
this Friday's conference opener against Roane State.
In the women's game, Ashley Mason scored 23 points and grabbed 10
rebounds for her third straight double-double. Also in double
figures for the Lady Saluqis were Porshia Willis (14), Kenya Moore (13),
and Lakeisha Jackson (12). The Southwest women overcame poor free
throw shooting and 27 turnovers with an outstanding defensive effort,
limiting Northwest to only 33 percent shooting and outrebounding the Lady
Rangers 60-53. Leading the Lady Saluqis in rebounding was Imesia
Jackson with 11 boards.
The Saluqi men jumped to a 25-point halftime lead (68-43), shooting 58
percent from the field and 64 percent from behind the three-point line.
For the game, Southwest shot 53 percent from the field (40/75), 46 percent
on three-pointers (11/24), and 79 percent from the free throw line
(34/43). The Saluqis also turned in a fine defensive effort,
allowing Northwest to shoot only 41 percent from the field (including only
31 percent in the first half) and 17 percent on three-point field goals.
Dee Burchett led Southwest in scoring with 23 points, while other top
scorers for the Saluqis were Moraye Ivy (21), Anthony Pigram (19), Deon
Lawson (18), and Nick Covington (13).
