SOUTHWEST SWEEPS ROANE STATE AND WALTERS STATE TO
OPEN CONFERENCE PLAY
The Southwest men’s and women’s basketball teams opened
TJCCAA play over the weekend at the Verties Sails
Gymnasium with sweeps of Roane State and Walters State.
The 13th-ranked Saluqis improved to 3-1 on the season
while the Lady Saluqis are undefeated at 3-0.
On
Friday night, the Southwest men defeated Roane State
119-72 as sophomores Dominique Johnson and A.J. Nance led the way with 19 points each.
Other top scorers, all freshmen coming off the bench,
were Markecio Beal (15), James Justice (12), Paxton
Jackson (12), and Rafeal Riley (10). Nance was also the
leading scorer against Walters State on Saturday,
scoring 21 points to lead the Saluqis to a 100-95
victory. Two other Saluqis who had outstanding games
against Walters State were freshmen Jeremy Rodgers, who
recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds,
and sophomore Emmanuel Cheers who added 16 points, five
assists, and three steals.
Sophomores
Candace Rucker and Keona Brooks combined for 52 points
and sophomore Starkitsha Luellen
recorded a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds
to lead the Lady Saluqis to an 84-67 win over Roane
State on Friday. Rucker scored a game-high 29 points on
12 of 19 shooting and was also among team leaders with
nine rebounds, six steals, and four assists. Brooks
added 23 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two
blocked shots in 39 minutes of play. In Saturday’s 68-60
win over Walters State, Rucker led Southwest with 19
points, nine rebounds, four assists, and four steals
while Luellen and sophomore Cristil Camper added 11
points apiece.
The Southwest men return to action on Tuesday against
the Arkansas Tech junior varsity at 7 p.m. at the
Verties Sails Gym. Both teams are on the road this
weekend with conference games at Chattanooga State on
Friday and Motlow State on Saturday.
