SALUQIS DEFEAT CHATTANOOGA AND MOTLOW TO REMAIN UNDEFEATED

The Southwest men’s basketball team won two games over the weekend at the Verties Sails Gymnasium to improve its record to 6-0 on the season including 4-0 in the Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association. The Lady Saluqis split their two games and are now 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the TJCCAA.

On Friday night, Deante Burgess (pictured at left) scored a season-high 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the men’s team to a 98-83 win over Chattanooga State. Other top scorers for the Saluqis were Donald Boone (15), James Hooper (13) and Nathan Walton (13).

The Saluqis, ranked ninth in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s pre-season poll, defeated Motlow State 87-76 on Saturday afternoon. Southwest was again led in scoring by Boone (18) and Walton (17). Also scoring in double figures were Emmanuel Cheers (12) and Greg Grimes (10), who also led the team with seven rebounds.

Despite a game-high 36 points from Ashley Shields, the Southwest women’s team lost a 76-73 decision on Friday night to defending region champion Chattanooga State. Brittany Smith (pictured at right) scored 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds while Jasmine Massey added 10 points.

The Lady Saluqis came back on Saturday afternoon to defeat last year’s region runner-up Motlow State 76-46. Twelve players scored on the day, led by Shields (17), Daumonique Lenhardt (12), and Smith (10). Carol Martin scored nine points and was the leading rebounder with six.
