SOUTHWEST MEN LOSE
TWO, LADY SALUQIS WIN TWO IN HOLIDAY CLASSICS
The fifth-ranked Southwest men's
basketball team lost two close games over the weekend in the Saluqi
Classic at the Verties Sails Gymnasium, dropping their record to 6-2
on the season. On Friday night, the Saluqis lost 86-82 to
Cincinnati State and on Saturday were defeated 66-64 by
eighth-ranked Howard (TX) in a matchup of two top ten teams.
In
Friday's game against Cincinnati State, Donald Boone scored 22
points and Nathan Walton added 14 points and ten rebounds to lead
Southwest. Greg Grimes (pictured at right) led the Saluqis
with 12 points in the loss to Howard.
The Lady Saluqis won both games in the
Georgia Perimeter Classic in Atlanta, improving their record to 6-1
on the season. After defeating South Georgia Tech 90-66 on
Friday, Southwest beat the host school Georgia Perimeter 72-69 on
Saturday afternoon. Ashley Shields scored 19 points against South
Georgia Tech to lead five players who scored in double figures.
Other top scorers for the Lady Saluqis were Tameka Wooten (15),
Keona Brooks (14), Michelle Malone (12), and Gina High (11).
Top scorers in the Georgia Perimeter game were Shields (19), Brooks
(12), Britany Sublett (12), and Jasmine Massey (11).
The Southwest basketball teams return to
action this Wednesday, November 29 when they take on Coahoma
Community College in Clarksdale, Mississippi. The women's game will
tip off at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8 p.m. This Saturday,
December 2, Southwest will travel to Cleveland, Tennessee for
conference games against Cleveland State.
