The Southwest Saluqis and Lady Saluqis basketball
teams defeated Coahoma Community College on Friday night in the season
opener for both teams. Southwest defeated Coahoma 130-87 in the men's game
as seven Saluqis scored in double figures, led by Benjamin Mitchum with 21
points. Other top scorers were Toriano Stokes (16), Tyrone Scott (14), Eric
Christopher (12), Brian Kizzie (11), Londrick Nolen (11), and Cedric Walker
(11). Nolen was also the leading rebounder with nine.The Lady Saluqis defeated Coahoma by a score of 97-53
and were led in scoring by Candice Holliday with 19 points and Larisha
Graves with 18. Also scoring in double figures for Southwest were Julia Cole
and Patrice Middleton with 10 points each. Cole also led the Lady Saluqis
with 10 rebounds.
The next game for Southwest will be Tuesday, November
5 when the Saluqis and Lady Saluqis take on Northwest Mississippi Community
College at the Verties Sails Gymnasium on the Union Campus. The women's game
gets underway at 6:00 p.m., followed by the men at 8:00 p.m.
Following Tuesday night's game, the Southwest men's
team will travel to Twin Falls, Idaho, to play in the K & T Steel
Tournament on November 7-9. Saturday night's game against Southern Idaho (at
