SOUTHWEST SWEEPS COAHOMA
IN SEASON OPENER
The Southwest men’s and women’s basketball teams defeated
Coahoma Community College in both games of a doubleheader last Tuesday,
November 1, at the Verties Sails Gymnasium.

In the men’s game, all
fifteen Saluqis played at least 13 minutes and scored as Southwest won by a
117-56 score. Lester Hudson (pictured at right) scored 14 points to
lead six players in double figures for Southwest. Other top scorers were
Anthony Pigram (13), Moraye Ivy (12), Darius Simmons (11), Anthony Barbee
(10), and Tim Bates (10). The Saluqis dominated every facet of the game,
out-rebounding Coahoma 57-34, out-shooting the Tigers 51 percent to 29
percent, and forcing 32 turnovers. Southwest led 56-17 at the half and
outscored Coahoma 61-39 in the second stanza.
Jasmine
Massey (pictured at left) scored 21 points (on seven three-point
field goals) and Imesia Jackson scored 18 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to
lead the Lady Saluqis to a 90-73 victory. Other players who had an
outstanding game for the Southwest women were Michelle Malone (11 points),
Brittany Smith (12 rebounds), and Porshia Willis (career-high 13 assists).
For the game, the Lady Saluqis shot 39.2 percent from the field and limited
Coahoma to 34 percent (including only 29 percent in the first half).
Southwest also made 13 three-point goals on 33 attempts for 39.4 percent,
and held Coahoma to just 23 percent (6 of 26).
Southwest returns to action this Wednesday, November 9 when the Saluqis and
Lady Saluqis travel to Clarksdale, Mississippi to take on Coahoma in a
rematch of last Tuesday’s games. The women’s game will tip-off at 6 p.m.,
followed by the men at 8 p.m. Both games will be broadcast locally on WUMR
91.7 FM. This weekend, Southwest will begin conference play with games
at home against Roane State on Friday night and Walters State on Saturday
afternoon.
