SOUTHWEST BASKETBALL TEAMS OPEN CONFERENCE PLAY
This weekend at the Verties Sails Gymnasium, the Southwest men’s and
women’s basketball teams will open play in the Tennessee Junior and
Community College Athletic Association with games against Roane State
Community College and Walters State Community College. Southwest hosts Roane
State on Friday, November 11 with the women’s game beginning at 6 p.m.
followed by the men at 8 p.m. On Saturday, November 12, Southwest will play
defending (men’s and women’s) Region VII champion Walters State at 2 p.m.
(women) and 4 p.m. (men).
Coach Verties Sails’ men’s team is 2-0 on the season with two victories over
Coahoma Community College. Through the two games, the Saluqis are scoring an
average of 100.0 points per game while allowing only 52.5 per game. Four
players are averaging in double figures in a very balanced scoring attack –
sophomores Lester Hudson (10.5), Anthony Pigram (10.5), and Moraye Ivy
(10.0), and freshman Greg Grimes (10.0).
The Lady Saluqis, coached by Andrea Martre, are 1-1 on the season after
splitting two games with Coahoma. The Southwest women are averaging 80.5
points per game and are led in scoring by freshman Jasmine Massey, who is
averaging 15.0 points per game and has made 10 three point field goals. The
second leading scorer is sophomore Imesia Jackson (14.5 points and a
team-leading 10.5 rebounds per game). Also scoring in double figures is
freshman Tonya Walker, who is averaging 12.0 points and 7.5 rebounds.
Saturday’s games against Walters State will be broadcast locally on WUMR
91.7 FM, while Friday’s Roane State games will be webcast on the Southwest
website: athletics.southwest.tn.edu.
