SOUTHWEST SWEEPS JACKSON STATE, TRAVELS TO
NATIONALLY-RANKED SAINT CATHARINE ON SATURDAY
Playing at home for the first time in eleven days, the Southwest men’s and
women’s basketball teams swept conference rival Jackson State on Wednesday
night at the Verties Sails Gymnasium.
The
Lady Saluqis came from behind to defeat Jackson State 78-74 after trailing
by as many as 12 points in the second half. Sophomore forward Imesia Jackson
led Southwest with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore guard Porshia
Willis (pictured at right) scored 21 points on 7 of 9 shooting.
Jackson’s basket and free throw with 19 seconds remaining gave the Lady
Saluqis a 76-74 lead then Willis made two free throws with 10 seconds left
to insure the win. Willis and Jackson were also the main contributors in the
comeback. Willis scored all 21 of her points in the second half, including 4
for 4 from behind the three-point arc, while Jackson scored 12 points after
the halftime break. The win improved the Lady Saluqis’ record to 3-4 overall
and 2-3 in the Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association.
The
Southwest men also came from behind to defeat Jackson State 98-85 after
trailing by four points at halftime. The Saluqis outscored Jackson State
57-40 in the second half behind the scoring of sophomores Lester Hudson and
Moraye Ivy. Hudson led Southwest with 17 points, while Ivy added 15.
Freshman post man Chris Evans (pictured at left) had his best game of
the season with 10 points and season-high 12 rebounds. The Saluqis shot an
impressive 52 percent from the field (including 56 percent in the second
half) and out-rebounded Jackson State by a 53-35 margin. The Southwest men
are now 6-1 on the season, including 4-1 in the TJCCAA.
Next up for Southwest is a road trip to Saint Catharine (KY) College this
Saturday, December 3. The women’s game will tip-off at 2 p.m. (EST) with the
men following at 4 p.m. (EST). The Saint Catharine men entered this week
with a perfect 7-0 record and are ranked 16th in this week’s National Junior
College Athletic Association poll.
