BURGESS LEADS BALANCED
SCORING IN WINS OVER ARKANSAS BAPTIST AND HIWASSEE
The Southwest men’s basketball team used balanced scoring in both
games last week at the Verties Sails Gym in wins over Arkansas Baptist
and Hiwassee with at least five players scoring in double figures each
game. The wins improved the Saluqis’ record to 10-2 overall and 6-0 in
the TJCCAA.
Freshman
center Deante Burgess (pictured at right) led the team in scoring
and rebounding both games. On Wednesday, Burgess scored a season-high 20
points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Saluqis to a 98-86 victory
over Arkansas Baptist. Also scoring in double figures for Southwest were
freshman Ervin Herron (18), sophomore Donald Boone (14), freshman
Emmanuel Cheers (13), freshman A.J. Nance (13), and sophomore Nathan
Walton (11).
On Saturday against Hiwassee, Burgess scored 19 points and grabbed a
season-high 14 rebounds to lead the Saluqis to a 111-84 victory. Other
top scorers for Southwest were Nance (18), sophomore Greg Grimes (17),
Cheers (17) and Boone (13). The Saluqis forced Hiwassee into committing
29 turnovers with 23 of those on steals. Defensive leaders for Southwest
were freshman Marcus Prewitt (4 steals), Boone (4 steals), and Burgess
(3 blocked shots, 4 steals).
