SHIELDS LEADS LADY SALUQIS TO WINS OVER ARKANSAS BAPTIST AND HIWASSEE

Sophomore guard Ashley Shields averaged 22.5 points, 15.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists last week while leading the Southwest women’s basketball team to victories over Arkansas Baptist and Hiwassee. The wins improved the Lady Saluqis’ record to 10-1 on the season including 5-1 in the Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association.

On Wednesday night at the Verties Sails Gymnasium, Shields scored 26 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as the Lady Saluqis defeated Arkansas Baptist 62-42. Southwest shot only 30.4 percent from the field and committed 27 turnovers but limited Arkansas Baptist to only 21.7 percent shooting and outrebounded them by a 68-43 margin.

Southwest defeated conference opponent Hiwassee on Saturday 74-62, also at the Verties Sails Gym. Shields recorded her second triple-double of the season with 19 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists, and also blocked a season-high four shots. Also scoring in double figures was freshman forward Starkitsha Luellen (pictured at left) with 13 points on 6 of 8 shooting.
